M8
One of BMW's best-kept secrets is the canceled BMW M8 Prototype. Originally envisioned as a Ferrari competitor, only a single prototype was ever produced, equipped with a special 550 bhp (410 kW) version of the S70 engine, essentially a bored out version of the M70 with experimental multi valve cylinder heads. A common misconception is that this engine eventually ended up in the McLaren F1. However, when this was suggested to McLaren's designer Gordon Murray, the idea was rejected because the engine was overweight and too long for the McLaren F1. A whole new engine was designed which has a closer resemblance to the later euro S50B30 BMW M3 engine.

The project was eventually scrapped because BMW decided that there was no market for an M8. The only prototype ever produced (one that was reportedly not even road safe) was locked away by BMW in the company's Giftschrank (poison storage) and has reportedly been destroyed[2].

While the M8 was never produced, it is interesting to note that the 850CSi was also tuned by BMW's "M" division. Aside from sporting an M-tuned engine (as identified by the S suffix instead of the M prefix that a true M car would wear), the car's VIN identifies the car as being built by BMW Motorsport (identified by the WBS prefix) instead of BMW AG (WBA prefix). This effectively identifies the 850CSi as essentially a detuned version of the M8[3].

I just got passed by one on I95 in Florida, just north of West Palm Beach. It's real and it's beautiful.

The 8 series was a car built between 1989 to 1999, it is not in production, the pictures your seeing is the concept successor the BMW CS, built to compete with the Porsche Maserati, Ferarri and Mercedes, high performance 4 door cars.

this is indeed a nice car but i truely cannot see this doing 288 mph. because if it did they would be producing a supercar wich this is not.

All I know is I saw one in San Antonio on Feb 10, 2009. It clearly showed the 850CSi emblem and what looked to me the M8 emblem. Are there any fakes out there?

Top Gear – The BMW M* original concept had only one prototype, which was locked away and reportedly destroyed.
The pictures circling around the Internet claiming that BMW made a 462 kph car is an urban legend, pure fiction.
The pictures are actually that of a BMW concept car, the BMW CS, which is also dead. Read here on top gear’s website:

Bring on the M8 please BMW !! what a fantastic looking car. Design-engineering at its best and if we can believe the spec's, it sure will be BRUT POWER !! I drive the new M3 and the power coming from that small 4lt V8 engine is awesome.

Speechless!

Crockacrap no way can a BMW perform like that look at what happend to the M5 on top gear pieceacrap broke down. Anyway u need more that 1000bhp to clock over the 400km/h mark anyway also aero dynamics look all wrong was well until it is officially released by bmw and tested by Top Gear then I will remain sceptical

You should really first do a Google search before you post nonsense like this... It is absolute BS!!

Some other forum also has this post: http://www.tuning.online.pt/forum/bmw-back-bang-t86121.html

You will find the engine details match those of the Ferrari P4/5 without the ridiculous top speed and power figures!!

Hi Jaco, thanks for taking the time to comment.

As you can see from the post, I said that the pictures where emailed to me and that the specs were only rumoured.

Also, at the time of posting there were no search results for the BMW M8 or CS concept car, so there wasnn't any way to dispute or validate the email.

Also, the blog post that you refer me to was posted in February of this year, 8 months after this post. So cool it before you start throwing a tantrum next time.

Kind regards,

Lester

June 02, 2009. It clearly said M8 on it and I was curious about it so I hopped online to find out more about it and my search lead me here. Seems like I accidentally stumbled onto a rare unicorn. But 100% YES IT DID SAY M8 I was no further then 4ft. away from its back end that clearly had a M8 badge branded on it. So they're out there people just keep your eyes peeled. I just wish I would have snapped a picture like I thought about doing.

O.K. First off.. I seen one of these at a stop light just YESTERDAY

very nice looking, but 462 km/h = IMPOSSIBLE

Thanks for that Allen. I just got passed by a white M8 on El Camino Real in San Mateo near HWY92 and I seriously considered that I might be in a particularly lucid dream. I was sure the M8 didn't actually exist. You have confirmed my sanity and for that I am grateful.

cool car and all love it .but people do u think a car that big can handle the airo dynamics of 400+ kmh. the ducati alone has to configure its suspention and spoilers to get that fast......humm dog out

okay first of all, there is no "m8" out on the streets. Have you ever heard of false advertising? anyone can just place an M badge on the back of their 850csi and it magically becomes a "m8". but it's not. there is only ONE m8 ever made and it's only a prototype. the M8 had 550 horsepower and was used to shape the bmw mclaren f1. it also had NO pop up headlights. so if you see those "m8"'s out there, i want you to ask them to show you the engine and see if it's the 550 hp mclaren engine in there. open the door and read the label, it should say what the car really is, which would be 850...not an m8

i don't know why people think they know about 8 series. there is NO m8...i have an 850 myself and my dad is a bmw mechanic and him and his brother are only ones that know how to work on them around here. not even the only bmw dealership jackie cooper knows how to fix them. just saying, people just simply put the M badge next to the number 8 and it becomes an "m8". jeez people believe anything they see these days

wow,ouh my GOd whats a men to say when such beuty is placed before him
